WIP Card game
A 1 vs. 1 card game that tries to combine the combat of a Magic: The Gathering or Hearthstone with the variablility of a deck building game. This design was inspired by the “Decks Assemble!” Tavern Brawl. In that Tavern Brawl, a weekly mode that changes up the rules of Hearhtstone in some way, each player starts with the same deck of cheap minions, coins, and buffs. Every turn you are offered 3 random cards and have to pick one to add to your hand. At the end of the turn the remaining cards in your hand are discarded and a new hand of 5 is drawn, like most other deck building games. I loved this brawl more than a lot and played it more than any of the other Brawls over the years, and while waiting for it to come back I started thinking about making something inspired by it. There are problems with this brawl that are inherited from Hearthstone’s limitations, like the fact that Hearthstone doesn’t have any explicit discard pile or graveyard it can be unclear where you cards are going which makes “correct” decisions more difficult especially for new players.
So I decided to prototype my version, I used PlayingCards.io to make a version that I could use to playtest online. You can try it out by importing this file in a PlayingCards.io room. A Working In Progress explanation of the rules can also be found here.
I have also playtested an adaptation of these rules with Magic The Gathering’s basic rules, removing the rule where you die if you attempt to draw from an empty library, adding a “market zone” where cards can be added to your graveyard, and changing the end step to include discarding your hand and drawing 5 more cards.
