What I Played This Week (11/8/2020)
This week has been 12 years long, but I also didn’t spend a lot of time playing games this week. I did play Among Us for the first time on Election night while I tried to avoid waiting for results to come in. But now that it’s Sunday and Tuesday is finally over I’ll write some words about videogames.
Among Us: If you somehow haven’t heard about Among Us, it’s the latest hot game on Twitch. It’s a new Social Deduction game, where there is a group of players in a Spaceship/Airship/Lava Base, but 1/2/3 of your friends are trying to KILL YOU. Crewmembers have a list of tasks to do, but the imposters are trying to murder as many crewmembers as possible. So as a crewmember you must try to finish all your tasks while watching every other crewmember for suspicious behavior while you avoid being murdered yourself. Crewmembers can also vote to kill people (hopefully the imposters) as another way to win.
The game really depends on the group being on a similar skill level, our group was mostly people playing for the first time, so it took a couple games to figure out what to do, but we had good close games, which was good to see.
But after playing for a few hours I think I might enjoy watching Among Us more than actually playing it. As a viewerI can ignore the task mundanity and focus solely on the sleuthing, or I could play more and get better at the tasks.
Also, I don’t do a lot of socializing these days, and the few hours of playing this and chatting with some friends really exhausted me, or maybe it was the 2 beers I had that night (I am old, and a lightweight now).
Lastly, I think it’s extra cool that the team that built Among Us is (at least in part) located in Redmond, love to see a local team find such huge success.
Hearthstone Battlegrounds: I probably won’t really talk much about Standard Hearthstone much in these things any more, I basically only play Battlegrounds now. Last week I wrote about how I was doing a lot of losing and how I ended up forcing elementals most games. They’ve since released a large balance update to Battlegrounds (and duels) that took a lot of power out of Elementals. They also made the other change that I had wanted, elementals are no longer in every game of Battlegrounds, so I’ve now played a game of Battlegrounds without elementals in it which was great. Just before the patch, and now in the newest patch I’ve had a lot more success getting top 4s and wins. Battlegrounds feels like it’s in a good state right now and that’s nice.
Hades: I have now rolled credits on Hades, and completed one more run in the epilogue. I think I’m going to keep playing it still, I have Fates to complete, characters to give gifts to, cosmetic items to buy. Not sure I’m going to make a Game of the Year thing at the end of the year but if I do I will certainly talk about Hades in that.
Mini Metro: Mini Metro is still excellent. Maybe I’ll have more words for it next week.
Want To Play: Zachtronics games has a new game that came out this week: Möbius Front '83 about Reagan-Era America finding an “evil” shadow America popping up in the middle of the country. I really enjoyed Zachtronics Opus Magnum, a puzzle game with a surprisingly compelling story. I might even play this once I finish writing this post.
